Taxidermy is exciting and has many rewards. I had not expected to be making a living at it. However fate has brought it to be. It's the reward of turning someones trophy animal into artwork,to me that is truly rewarding.
I've just started my taxidermy business when I had a unfortunet job change. I love to learn and discover myself, and have always wanted to learn/perfect my taxidermy skills. I've learned how through books and videos it fells good doing something different and…There is nothing more satisfying than to teach yourself how to do something and then be able to become great at it.” I believe I have a ways to go before becoming great at it. It takes practice and I have to spendding alot of time working on it.”
All really good mounts start with a good hide preparation prior to the process to actual tanning. I believe in good hide preperation & tanning. I do not send the hides out to the tannery. Then have to wait months to gets it back.
Once I secure your hide I use an "AUTO TANNER".
With an auto tanner the rough fleshed raw cape is put in and run with the crystals, which is aluminum sulphate/salt mixture, pressurize the tank to 50 psi. This is how it performs the pickling process, there is no salting or conventional pickle involved. I really like how simple this method is, compared to the static tanning. The capes shave really easy also. I like the fact that after I prep the capes, I run the machine for 2 hours, flesh the thick areas around the neck, face, then 2 more hours, then on to the freezer. After I tan about 12 or so, I drag them back out 2 at a time and detail flesh around the face, wash them real quick, towel dry, oil, and in 4 hours I mount them. Which is where the real artwork takes place.
I take my time during this process, which takes about 2-5 hours total. I like putting the artificially made rocks and habitat on the displays, if added the 3-D appearance really creates a lot of realism . I also like giving extra time at detailing around the mouth an eyes the moister droplets on the nose and wiskers bring out the modern realisim. Also by adding habitat scenery and other extra details with your mounts, it really makes them appear alive.
Having just an animal head on the wall is the old way of doing it. I have also found that most wives are more open to having this style mounts in their/our homes. I often ask people, let me dress that up for you,by putting a little scenery with it." Your wife will love it."
